Fun with Google Maps

I’ve been working on a pretty cool new project that combines Kings player information with Google maps. Basically, I’ve linked player profiles to their hometown location so that you can graphically see where they come from along with their information.

What’s so cool about Google maps is you can view as much or little detail as you like. Zoom, pan, street maps, terrain, satellite, etc. You can also use the new “earth” feature, which is pretty frickin cool.

I’ve finished the Kings and Monarchs player map. I’ll be breaking up players into three groups:

Here are a some screen grabs of what it looks like…

Each "flag" represents a player

Click on a flag to reveal the player's location and profile

Each player is also listed alphabetically

Will you be doing it for where they grew up playing hockey,or where they were born?

I’m surprised no one had done this before, for the Kings organization.Maybe when your done, you could add a 4rth catagory, and do the coaching staffs.

    So impressed,excellent job!

Thanks Dom. From all the player profiles I’ve seen, I think they list where they were born. I’m not sure if there’s an accurate list of where players spent most of their youth playing hockey as well.

I only know a few player stories just from reading or listening to interviews. For instance, Kozun was born right here in Los Angeles and then moved to Calgary when he was around 10. But I wouldn’t know that unless I saw that story.

So finding a list of ALL players that includes both where they were born and where they played might not exist. I would, indeed, like to add more info to each player’s link, so if you know of any websites that might have useful or cool info, let me know. As it stands now, I’m only linking to hockey’s future website for prospects and AHL players. I’ll probably link to the King’s main site for NHL players.

Also, I’m working on your “Hockey 101″ idea…
