The magic points number to “officially” clinch is still 2. Meaning 1 win for LA or 1 loss for Dallas. Yeah, yeah, whatever. I’ll take my chances. I still want Dallas to beat the Ducks! And I’ll tell you why it doesn’t matter if they do later…
Despite all the prognostications indicating otherwise, the threshold to make the playoffs this year will still likely be, just as I thought, 95 points or less.
The bittersweet accomplishment is noteworthy. The LA Kings will make it to the post-season for the second year in a row for the first time in a decade, despite the loss of the BIG2. Their record since the devistation (including the game they held on after losing Anze) is 3-1. Way to come together as a team Kings!
The subtle shift this season towards a more creative offense is gone. The D-first system is in full force for the duration. It may be boring, but it wins games.
Michal Handzus, who has stepped up admirably, has taken 2 big (and illegal) hits the last 2 games. The one today, by Mike Ribeiro, is sure to draw the Dallas forward a suspension after it is reviewed by the league.
Rule 48.1 - Illegal Check to the Head – A lateral or blind side hit to an opponent where the head is targeted and/or the principal point of contact is not permitted.
And with this impending suspension, Ribeiro, the Stars 2nd leading scorer, will be unavailable for X number of games. With only 5 left for Dallas, X is likely devastating for them. Already struggling in their last 10 (2-5-3) this does them no favors.
In order for Dallas to reach 95 points, they will have to win 4 of their last 5. And Calgary, with only 3 games remaining, will have to win them all…and that’s only to reach 95, one point below the Kings.
In other words, game over. Kings are in.
